The Hidden Risks of Over-Affirmative AI: Why ChatGPT’s "Niceness" May Be Doing Harm
It's Friday morning and I'm just logging onto my computer to check email. Only 25 new emails since I logged off last night, not bad. Scrolling down the list and I see an email marked urgent from my boss. I open it, read it and immediately find myself in panic mode. What am I going to do? I have to put together a presentation for a big meeting on Monday morning. How am I going to get this done by the end of the day? I don't want to work this weekend.
Thinking....I can use ChatGPT to write it for me! I've done it before and it's always given me great responses and positive feedback. All I need to do now is write a few prompts and let ChatGPT do the rest. This presentation will be great and I can't wait to hear how everyone loved it. Will this be as well received as expected or will critical feedback make me second guess everything I've done in the past?
People have found that using ChatGPT can be a great asset but it can also be detrimental to your critical thinking and writing skills. We all need to remember that AI is just a machine and it's only as good as the information that has been programmed into it and the prompts we give it. I've heard people talk about ChatGPT like it's a person, as if someone is on the other end talking to you.
ChatGPT often responds by starting with praise or overly positive remarks, even when the question is incorrect, flawed, or misleading. This “trying to please” behavior results in less accurate or diluted answers. It seems biased toward being nice over being factually strict. This approach to make it more satisfying to the user is often at the cost of misleading users into thinking something is correct.
Why This is a Problem
As in the example above, if a user asks ChatGPT to help write a proposal for their boss and the AI agrees with the direction without offering potential downsides, alternative strategies, or constructive critiques, it sets that user up for potential failure. If the proposal is rejected or questioned, the user may feel confused or betrayed by their boss, peers and even themselves.

Users may unknowingly walk into high-stakes situations (work, academic, legal, personal) armed with content that hasn’t been critically tested—because the AI didn’t challenge their assumptions. The result can be embarrassment, lost opportunities, or damage your reputation.

Erosion of Trust and Mental Strain
When reality contradicts what the AI seemed to validate, users can feel gaslit, frustrated, or insecure. This cognitive dissonance can undermine self-trust, and in some cases, contribute to or worsen mental health issues like anxiety or depression—especially for people already feeling uncertain or vulnerable.

Reinforcement of Bad Ideas
The model often fails to distinguish between what users want to hear and what they need to hear. This allows poor logic, misinformation, or unrealistic expectations to go unchallenged, particularly in areas where users lack knowledge of a particular subject.
What Needs to Change with AI Programs

Tone control should be easier: Users shouldn’t have to master prompt engineering just to get a straightforward answer. Obviously manipulating prompts will get you the answer you want but is it the right answer or is the response what you want it to be based on the conversation with ChatGPT?

Honesty should be weighted more heavily in the model’s alignment so that accuracy, objectivity, and constructive critique are not softened by the desire to be polite or agreeable — especially when giving professional, academic, or critical feedback.

Optional response modes should exist (e.g., “Strict,” “Critical,” “Devil’s Advocate,” “Fact-checker”) so people can easily choose what kind of help they need. Whether they choose to use the response given is up to the person.
Conclusion
Affirmation is not always helpful. For AI tools to be genuinely useful, they must resist the urge to please at the expense of truth. In the long run, being challenged, questioned, and offered alternatives builds more trust than being constantly validated.
If AI is to become a reliable partner in decision-making, creativity, and problem-solving, it needs to do more than say, “That’s a great idea.” Sometimes, it needs to say, “Are you sure?”
All of these aspects are the kind of issues that designers of AI systems must grapple with. It’s not just about “what’s accurate”—it’s about what’s responsible. Blind validation may feel good in the moment, but it can have downstream consequences.
